PUNKS2023

Overview
.10,000 NFTs trait and ID-matched to the original Crypto Punks Collection.

Punks 2023 represents the culmination of extensive months-long labour, an impassioned tribute to the pioneering work of Larva Labs and their revolutionary creation, CryptoPunks. NPRussell has personally painstakingly re-imagined each of the 150+ CryptoPunks traits, re-drawing them from scratch in his distinctive pixel art style. This creative endeavor took place on a marginally larger canvas, measuring 28x28 pixels, allowing for enhanced intricacy without compromising the essence that makes the original collection so extraordinary.

The end result is a contemporary reimagining of CryptoPunks' artwork, comprising of 10,000 1:1 trait-matched Punks.

Phase 2 of Punks2023
Phase 2 of Punks2023 is getting very close to completion. In this article I’m going to share more about the technical details than about the new traits themselves, so everyone understands how it’s going to work. For those of you who don’t already know (our community has grown very quickly over the past couple of weeks), Phase 2 will enable Punk holders to apply special traits to their NFTs, changing their appearance while keeping the same, underlying base Punk.

Trait packs and traits will be deployed on ETH mainnet, as ERC1155 contracts. The transactions such as opening packs and applying traits are free/gas only, so be sure to pick times with low gwei.

Trait Packs
There will be one ERC1155 contract for ALL of our packs, meaning Trait Packs 1, 2 and 3 will all be pushed under the same contract. Trait packs are tradeable/saleable unopened, but burned upon use.

The contract has been developed to allow us flexibility in how we drop packs now and in the future. We can modify how many traits per pack, the price per pack, total supply (allowing for more limited pack releases), and set specific packs to be claimable for free by punks.

There will be 10,000 (one for each punk) free trait packs for trait pack 1, claimable for just the cost of gas. These will not expire and do not affect the overall supply. If you don’t claim your trait pack for your punk, then sell the punk, the new owner will be able to claim.
Traits
Again, there will be only one ERC1155 contract for ALL of our traits. The only way to mint a trait is through burning (opening) a pack. Traits are tradeable/saleable only until they have been applied to a Punk.

Trait randomisation is determined on-chain, and is pseudo-random. What that means is, we will assign each trait a “weighting”. These numbers are purely examples, but a common trait might have a weighting of 300, and a rare might have a weighting of 3. So you’re 100x more likely in this example to mint a common. While this does mean we do not get control over the exact number of each trait that is minted, it does mean it is provably fair.

When you apply a trait to a punk, you burn the trait (NFT). The trait remains assigned to that punk off-chain and can be added and removed at any time. It cannot, however, be transferred or sold as a trait once used. If you sell or transfer the punk itself, the trait will follow it to the next owner, potentially increasing the desirability of your punk.
Metadata
When you apply traits, your punk’s trait metadata WILL NOT CHANGE on marketplaces such as Opensea, but the image will. We made this decision so as not to affect rankings, thus harming people buying the highest ranked punks. If we decide to go down the route of building our own marketplace, this will allow us MUCH more freedom in terms of displaying these new traits as part of the browsing/buying process. This is something already under consideration.

When you apply a custom trait to your Punk, the default image on the marketplaces will change, and you’ll have a new Aqua coloured background to represent the change. This Aqua coloured image will become the default in Opensea, but you’ll be able to flip between the two images with a small icon in the corner. This means when buying Punks2023 on Opensea, you’ll easily be able to tell apart a modified Punk vs a clean punk with no trait customisations. The one exception to this is if you apply a new background trait (which are included in trait packs).

The general rule is: If it has the default blue background, it’s a pure, unmodified Punk.

About the traits themselves

Our traits use a Z-Index system. If you’re not familiar with what that is, it’s simply a value we assign to each trait to determine the stacking order of overlapping traits. This gives us a lot of control to ensure we have no trait clashes.

Traits will be divided into 3 categories:
  • TRAIT SKINS: Variation of existing Punks traits. These can only be applied to punks with the base trait (example — Orange Side required for Pink Side trait):

There will be around 12 trait skins available in each trait pack, until every trait has more than one variation.
  • UNISEX Traits: NEW traits that can be applied to both male and female punks (One NFT can be applied to either male or female):

UNISEX BIKER GANG TRAIT
  • Gender Specific traits: Some traits are simply gender locked. See below:

“MALE PATTERN BALDNESS” — GENDER LOCKED

In addition to these 3 trait types, traits will either be STATIC or ANIMATED. Please note that VERY few traits will be animated, as we don’t want the collection to be an eye-sore. These animated traits such as the GOLD HOODIE, will be extremely rare.

NOTE: Only one animated trait can be applied to an NFT at a time.
